9th National Reading - "Balladyna" by Juliusz Slowacki
The National Reading event took place on Saturday, September 5th. It was ninth edition of the annual event sponsored by the Polish President and the First Lady and this year we read "Balladyna" by J. Slowacki.
"Balladyna" is a drama written in late 19th century by Polish poet and dramatist Juliusz Slowacki. It is a story of two sisters, about love and betrayal, about crime and punishment. It has all the main characteristic of the Polish literature of the Romanticism Epoch in Polish culture. And, as one can expect, is quite challenging to read and understand for our American born Polish students. Never the less, they have stepped up the challenge and did an amazing job. In spite of language difficulties, cultural differences, our students, graduates, parents and the teachers has shown the strength in working together. We are very proud of their work!
The whole project has been prepared and supervised by Karolina Lipiec and Katarzyna Wlodek. Both of you, ladies, did an amazing job selecting the parts of the drama, running a casting and afterward, preparing the cast for the show. Chapeau bas for your work and commitment!
Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has been messing with our lives for the past six months. As a school, we had to change all of our plans for at least next few months. And it didn't make our participation in the National Reading any easier. But we have the technology of the 21st century. We have used it, made it work for us, and now we proudly PRESENT the Jan Karski Polish School of Dallas in National Reading 2020.
