Seventh Polish Bilingual Day

Polish Bilingual Day is celebrated over the third weekend in October. Our school has been a part of this event for the seventh time.

'It's great to have you with us' was the main idea of this year's celebrations. After so many months of being distanced, separated, living a new reality with pandemic knocking to our doors - being able to actually be, meet with others have a different meaning now. Yes, IT IS GREAT to have you all here!

Our classes are always fun and busy, but during the Bilingual Day, kids are super busy learning and discovering how cool it is to know other languages as well. It's their superpower, right?

We are really proud of the Polish 101 for kids. It's really hard to learn Polish language, even harder when the parents speak in two different languages (or more) at home. But having fun during learning makes it a little easier.

Polish tongue twosters are not easy. Yes, we've all been there trying to pronounce "Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" without any mistakes. It can be frustrating, when your mind knows how to say it but your tongue doesn't co-operate. Yet, when doing it for fun and having a great time with your friends also makes things easier to pronounce.

A little older students were able to check their knowledge about Polish geography and history. There was a lot of quizzes with prizes, of course. The teachers as always went above and beyond making sure this day was a little different than the regular classes. We had a lot of help provided, as always by the foundation Dobra Szkoła Nowy York - thank you for all the materials we could use, any tips and information.

It was a day filled with fun and good stuff. Also literally, as our school cafeteria has re-opened and the parents could visit over some coffee and home made cake. There was also something else for them - a discussion panel about rising bi- or multilingual kids. It is not an easy task to keep up Polish language at home while it is a second, or even third language used by the students. How to do it on a daily basis? What is working, what is not? It was a great experience to hear the life stories, get first hand information about kids in different ages and families. Sometimes when it's getting really hard, it is god to know, that the are others in similar situation wo may be able to help out. We do hope that we would be able to continue on with this type of meeting, exchange of experiences and knowledge among our school members.
